a view of Alnmouth from the other side of the river aln showing the estuary and the sea
WELCOME TO ALNMOUTH

The site is not definitive - well , at least not yet! - and, whilst under construction we have chosen to have the site online as we feel that some information and some pictures are infinitely better than none!

From 1207 until the 19th century  vessels - such as this Brigantine in the 1800's - would carry cargo from the ancient port of Alnmouth - What happened and when? What terrible storm changed Alnmouth from one of the North east's oldest, largest ports to a peaceful seaside, estuary village. The HISTORY of Alnmouth helps to explain!

The village from the other side of the estuaryThe village of Alnmouth is in the Rural District of Alnwick in  Northumberland, the northernmost county in England. Northumberland is one of the largest counties in England and the most sparsely populated.

Located at the mouth of the River Aln estuary. We have a small population of approximately 600 people; a peaceful, heritage coastal setting with superb sandy beaches and we also boast 2 Golf Courses including the second oldest in England! The 'Parish' of Alnmouth covers about 345 acres in total.

I hope that you find the history of our village interesting. From Iron Age beginnings, the original seaport was established by William de Visci in the 12th century and in the past was not always noted for its righteousness! John Wesley on a visit stating that Alnmouth was 'a small seaport town famous for all kinds of wickedness'!
One of the outstanding events of the past was the bombardment by Paul Jones, 'a noted Pirate of his time'.

This small web site is to provide you with some information about our village and it's nearby neighbouring villages including: Boulmer - on the coast, Lesbury -just up river and inland, also Hispsburn and Bilton - over the bridges and inland. All within walking distance of each other. A map of our area showing the coast and these villages is on the web site

Nor are we that hard to get to : There is a rail station called "Alnmouth Station" - not in Alnmouth but in a nearby village (Hipsburn) on the other side of the river. GNER trains from London, Edinburgh and Glasgow stop here a few times each day. VIRGIN trains stop here on their route from the West Country to Edinburgh.History still remains in the names of the streets

Our village will hopefully become 'The place to stay' for those people in 2001 and onwards who will be wishing to visit the magnificent gardens that Jane of Northumberland is creating at Alnwick Castle. In time it is hoped that there will also be a steam railway link between Alnmouth railway station and Alnwick - our nearest Town some 4.5 miles (7 km) away. there is a range of accommodation available in our local area - some shown on this website - including Self Catering holiday cottages, Guest Houses, Bed and Breakfast and Hotels. We suggest a visit to the Alnwick Coast and Country Tourism web pages may also be useful if trying to find accommodation.

I have to apologise for the site whilst under development - not all links work as yet - but hopefully you will find our accommodation and things to do, places to visit, where to eat, etc slowly filling with information!!!

emails from welcomed from anyone who has photos or articles to offer about the village and surrounding area
